Graduation.
Safaree and I had been friends for years. He used to live on my block when I first moved to Queens. He was originally from Brooklyn. His mother and my mother instantly clicked, so we saw a lot of each other.
That was many years ago and we were older now. Safaree was 20 and I was 18 and pursuing my acting career. I had finished up at LaGuardia and my graduation was in 3 days. Safaree on the other had was still in High School and he was 20, I know it sounds bad but he was actually really intelligent and sweet...and funny. He just goofed off a lot and slacked. He was planning on pursuing a career in rapping. He was pretty good at it from my understanding.
Today we were in Manhattan looking for a dress for me to wear to my graduation. Safaree and I had been an item since I was a junior and I wanted to keep it to myself. From what everyone knew, we were just best friends and it wasn't ever questioned.
"What about this one?" I held up a typical sun dress that was pink lemonade pink.. He shrugged which meant he didn't like it. I then tried on a black dress that was a mid body con. I hated the color black but I loved the way it fit.
"I like the way it fits your curves but I think you should do a different color, maybe red?" He loved red on me, mostly because it was his favorite color.
"You know I don't even like red." I said starring at him, he didn't budge.
"Just try one on." So I did, I skimmed the racks and came across a red mid body con dress it had a sweetheart neckline and straps. I was happy I was wearing a gown to cover it because I was always self conscious about my body no matter how many times I was told I should love it because it was amazing by my best friend Thembi and plenty others. Or how many times I got stopped by guys and complimented on it.
I walked out of the dressing room and Safaree took off his shade and took my hand in his twirling me around. "This is the one." He said grinning. I walked back into the dressing room took the dress off and walked back out I walked over to the register and laid it down. I pulled out my wallet and Safaree stopped me. He always tried to pay for me no matter how many times I told him I had it.
We left the store and headed to my apartment in Queens, still in South-side I needed to be near my mom after my fathers incident years ago.
I flicked on the lights of my tiny, yet suitable apartment. I slipped off my shoes and walked past my living room and into my bedroom to see Thembi sprawled across my bed. I wondered why she was in my room and not hers. I turned on my light and she slowly got up.
"It's so hot in my room, my AC broke. And I forgot to get another one."
"It's fine Thembi, Safaree is here." I said sitting my bag down and pulling my dress out and putting it in my closet.
"When is he not here?" She rolled back over on my bed.
"Shutup, have you talked to Hakeem?"
"No... we're off again and I'm just so over it. He complains he never sees me but he can hop his ass on a train and come see me."
"Well he lives in Manhattan so he could have easily seen you on school days but he's a douche so what can you do?"
"I don't know... I don't really care either. Where do you wanna go for the senior trip after graduation?"
"I was thinking Hollywood... there's so many opportunities out there for us as actresses and we should explore."
"Really... you know I hate planes." I laughed at her.
"You'll be fine it'll be a good experience."
Graduation Day:
"You look beautiful Onika, I'm so proud you stuck it out. Aren't you happy I made you stay at LaGuardia?" My mom said fixing my cap and gown. I truthfully finished it out for her but I can't say I wasn't happy I did. It really helped me grow and figure out who I was and who I wanted to be as a person.
"Thanks ma" I smiled. "I'm gonna go see if Daddy and Cai are ready." She left me there and I took a seat on the couch and Safaree came and sat next to me. He rubbed my thigh.
"So proud of you Nic, you'll become an amazing actor one day. Considering how much you play with me."
"Whoah rephrase that nigga."
"I meant play around, you know what I meant." I did. I just liked messing with him. And that was a true statement either I was a really good actress or he was extremely gullible, probably a little of both.
Ma came back with Cai and Daddy both dressed in suits Cai had on a pink tie because it was my favorite color and Daddy had on a pink one as well. The ties were my idea. And then we were off to the school.
I walked across the stage. My name was called towards the middle because my last name started with an M and we all went up alphabetically. I was handed my diploma and a plaque with my superlative "Most Likely To Be Successful" I was sure I'd get the one for playing around or something but I was wrong. I was happy with mine it was really shocking that people would vote me that because I thought about giving up so many times. I waved and walked off the stage and took my seat again. Once everyone was finished our principal announced us.
"Your LaGuardia graduating class everyone!" We all threw up our hats and cheered.
Later that day a bunch of the drama kids, Thembi, Safaree, Hakeem, who finally came to see Thembi and I were gathered at a Jamaican restaurant in Queens. My favorite restaurant.
"Onika why you got us at this Jamaican restaurant for our graduation dinner." Nick said. Nicki cut her eyes at him.
"I mean no one else was trynna tell da kid where they wanted to go so da kid had to make the decision."
The group continued on with their dinner longer than a normal dinner because they were talking and reminiscing over the past 4 years they've spent together, where they intend on going to school, if they'll continue their acting, and just random stuff.
"Where are you guys going for your senior trip?" Nicki asked taking a sip of her water to wash down her fried dumplings.
"We were gonna just chill here here we don't really have anything saved up it planned." Nick answered.
"Aw that's no fun. Come to Hollywood with me and Bhembi!" Nicki suggested.
"No mulah Onika!" A girl named Jayne answered.
"Oh... right."
"You didn't tell me you were going to Holkywood Thembi." Hakeem said with a little attitude in his voice.
"I was going to tell you we aren't leaving until Sunday. Chill, okay?" And he did just that. The night was beginning to wind down and the group parted ways. Thembi, Safaree, and I headed to Queens. Safaree just liked to make sure I got home safe he went to his home in Brooklyn. I probably wouldn't see him until Thembi and I left on Sunday. I was fine with that because we spent every second together and I loved it but sometimes he could be one annoying ass coon.
As soon as we reached our apartment Thembi and I began packing our stuff int hear large suitcases we found while walking the shopping district in Manhattan one day. Thembi began shouting to me from her room.
"Do you think it'll be hot in LA?"
"That was a really stupid question Thembi! Of course!"
I was almost finished packing I had a large variety because I'm so in decisive and I also planned on buying a few things there. I packed two pairs of jeans, a few skirts, and a lot of shorts and tanks. I grabbed my little carry on and put my accessories in it and underwear. Thembi came into my room.
"How are you packed already?!" She asked shockingly.
"Because its not hard to pack for LA, make sure you have a lot of shorts and tanks and stuff oh and a bathing suit or a few actually. I also packed some skirts and jeans for a variety." I said grabbing my stash of cash and plane tickets and putting them in my purse. Thembi sighed and walked back into her room to finish packing while she did that I went to shower. I was exhausted and wanted noting more than to sleep.
Saturday:
Safaree knocked at my front door waking Thembi up then she began the day and I wake up after Safree decides to come in my room and tackle me and kiss me all over. I smiled and kissed him on the lips and got up. I wasn't expecting to see him today.
"Ew, morning breath." He scrunched up his face.
"Shutup!" He glared at me and smacked my butt on the way into the bathroom. He followed me there. I sat on the toilet a d relieved myself and Safaree came and put the seat down and sat on it after I used it. I washed my hands and began brushing my teeth. I had braces and I got them off today and I was so excited it was before we left for Hollywood. I figured that's why Safaree showed up today.
I walked back into my room, put on my glasses, a hoodie, jeans and air maxes. I hated them as well but you only make but so much waitressing at Red Lobster and my parents didn't see it as a necessity sinc e they've payed for my glasses for years. I grabbed my purse and headed out the door with Safaree.
"I'll be back later on Thembi!" She shouted back "Okay!"
Orthodontist:
I was sitting in the waiting room shaking my leg and holding Safaree's hand.
"It'll be alright Nic." He reassured me. I nodded. I was happy to get them off and petrified at the same time.
"Oh-knee-kuh, or Oh-NIY-kuh, Maraj" the lady said as she walked through a door in the corner of the waiting room.
"I'm right here!" I said standing up. Safaree let go of my hand and I walked back with the woman. He mouthed "You'll be fine." As I glanced back. I was such a big baby at times.
"Hi, I'm doctor Wong. Remember me?" He smiled.
"Yes" I shook his hand.
"Okay, so today we're gonna get these braces off." He adjusted my chair and out on some gloves after clipping the drop cloth around my neck.
"This a fairly simple procedure just bare with me alright, Onika?" I nodded he prayed my mouth open and went to work.
After a few hours I was out of the chair and on my way. I kept feeling my teeth. They were gorgeous. I was a little loopy off of the gas and my mouth was numb from the anesthesia. Safaree took me out for ice cream because that's all I was really up for eating. We sat outside and ate it and talked.
"You gonna be good in LA, for a week?" He asked. I pushed him and looked up at him with my head down.
"Of course... you know you can come as well."
"Nah, I'll be fine here. I just want you to be good there. Besides it should just be and experience for you and Thembi."
"Okay babe, I'll be good." I puckered my lips for a kiss. He kissed me and we jaded back home to his house.
"I feel like I haven't been here in ages." I said as I plopped on his couch. Vince, his room mate, walked out of his room in boxers.
"Sup, Nic." He nodded. I nodded back.
"Nigga put some clothes on!" He shouted to Vince who was now only he kitchen.
After a few hours Safaree and I were cuddled up on the couch watching Men in Black 2. He was into weird movies. I started getting tired and I wanted to go to sleep. I walked into his room and passé spit a few minutes later I felt him come lay behind me and we drifted off to sleep.
The next morning we got on the train and rushed back to Queens to grab my bags. Thembi and I had a flight to catch at 12:00 and it was now 10:56 and I was rushing upstairs to grab my suitcase. Thembi was ready at the door.
"You better get int he shower when we get to the hotel, dirty." She said. She always thinks Safaree and I are doing something when I'm at his house. When in reality we aren't. But I'll let her think what she wants. By 11:10 we were on the train on the way to LaGuardia airport in Manhattan. Once we arrived to the airport we checked in and boarded the flight.
Okay, I was going write about the LA trip but then I got lazy with the whole idea with this one shot but since I told you guys you'd get one and I kept fibbing you can have what I have done to hold you over until I think of something better.
